Simple Definition 

 

To put it simply, like every subculture, what one likes changes from individual to individual. Although all Goths are different, they have similarities such as the fascination with things that a "normal" person would consider dark such as death, decay, vampires, the color black, etc. 

 

Diversity within 

 

Not all Goths wear black 
Not all Goths like the same Music 
Not all Goths follow the same Religious Teachings 
Can be found everywhere around the globe 
Love all things ancient, yet can be totally modern in their social outlook 
Are often creative 
Are often peaceful 
Are often open minded 
Are often found with a sense of humor 
Drugs is not a factor of the subculture 
More often than not, a Goth prefers a long term relationship over one night stands 
Goths prefer to keep traditions and old customs alive such as Chivalry. 

 

Goth's Preferences 

 

Goth people have a fascination with mythology, the mysterious, supernatural, culture, tradition, romanticism and they tend to hold on to things that they feel are important and are dying out. 

 

Goths take pride in everything: Clothing, make up, inanimate objects, everything is beautifully crafted and done with pride and care. Meaning the cheaply made clothing found at stores such as Walmart, and places with mass produced factory products disgust a goth. Honestly I would prefer if my cloths didn't rip and need replacing after a month of use if I'm lucky. 

 

Different Types of Goth Fashion 

 

MODERN GOTH: Usually a person who chooses to wear dark clothing, mostly black. Some choose to wear Black Lipstick and eyeliner, some do not wear make up at all. 
STEAMPUNK: is a sub-genre of Goth. It is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian aesthetics combined with modern technology. It is a re-invented future or a past that never happened. Copper Tones are common with the technology. 
EMO is modern punk with a dark fashion sense. Usually EMO goths are seen as very emotional people, and tend to write things on a darker side of feelings. 
VICTORIAN Inspirations for the Romantic styles are taken from the Medieval, Renaissance, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. This is one of my favorites to look and design. For women it usually calls for a corset and fancy dress. 
CYBER Think of a futuristic post-apocalyptic world where you have to watch your back. Think of movies like Mad Max, Aeon Flux, The Matrix, Blade Runner and Minority Report. Think of colorful tubes used as hair pieces known as Cyberlox. 
LOLITA Gothic Lolita fashion is a dark baby-doll look. Think of the tragic undead life of Claudia in the movie Interview with the Vampire and how she is trapped in a child's body for eternity looking like a perfect doll and you began to understand what Gothic Lolita is about. This style first appeared in Japan in the 1980s and is still very popular. 
GOTHABILLY  is a sub-genre of Rockabilly, which was born out of the 1950s rhythm & blues and country stylings. Think about a mix of Betty Page, Dita Von Tease, Gwen Stefani and Guns & Roses and you get the idea. It’s a mixture of Rock and Roll and sometimes Spaghetti Westerns. A dark ghost town look with studs. The look is Cowboy hats, boots, tight fitting leather or PVC pants and dresses. 
GOTH ROCK/DEATH ROCK In about the late 70s, early 80s, modern Goth music and clothing came about. Goths liked the Punk look and so they borrowed from it but gave it a darker edge. Think Mohawks or big hair, band shirts, studded chokers and bondage pants.

PETER MURPHY 

 

Peter John Joseph Murphy is an English singer and musician. He was the vocalist of the rock group Bauhaus and later went on to release a number of solo albums, such as Deep, Holy Smoke, and Love Hysteria.

ALEISTER CROWLEY 

 

Perhaps no one single person has had such widespread influence on the countercultural turns of the 20th century as Cambridge-educated occultist and inventor of the religion of Thelema, Aleister Crowley. And according to Crowley, he isn’t finished yet. “1000 years from now,” Crowley once wrote, “the world will be sitting in the sunset of Crowlianity.” The self-aggrandizing Crowley called himself “the Great Beast 666” and many other tongue-in-cheek apocalyptic titles. The British press dubbed him “The Wickedest Man in the World,” also the title of the above documentary, one of a four-part BBC 4 series on famously sinister figures called “Masters of Darkness.” Crowley is perhaps most famous for his dictum “Do what thou wilt,” which, taken out of its context, seems to be a philosophy of absolute, unfettered libertinism. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TIM BURTON 

 

An American film director, producer, artist, writer and animator. He is known for his dark, gothic, eccentric and quirky fantasy films such as Beetlejuice (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), the animated musical The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), the biographical film Ed Wood (1994), the horror fantasy Sleepy Hollow (1999), and later efforts such as Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Dark Shadows (2012) and Frankenweenie (2012). ROBERT SMITH 

 

is an English singer, songwriter and musician. He is the lead singer, guitarist, lyricist and principal songwriter of the rock band the Cure. He is the band's only constant member since its formation in 1976. He has also played guitar in the band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Smith is a multi-instrumentalist, known for his unique stage look and distinctive voice. 

 

COOL FACTOID: Neil Gaiman, author and creator of Vertigo Comics' The Sandman (1989–1996), based the appearance of his lead character partly on that of Robert Smith, and partly on himself in his twenties 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MARILYN MANSON 

 

is an American singer, songwriter, musician, composer, actor, painter, author and former music journalist. He is known for his controversial stage personality and image as the lead singer of the band Marilyn Manson, which he co-founded with guitarist Daisy Berkowitz and of which he remains the only constant member. His stage name was formed by combining and juxtaposing the names of two American pop cultural icons: actress Marilyn Monroe and cult leader Charles Manson.
